14th June commemorates National Flag Day

If you like these red, blue and white flags flying in your area today then be grateful to Bernard J. Cigrand. Today is the National Flag Day of United States of America.

The flag is the result of Cigrand’s prolonged and dedicated effort of giving respect to sign of America. On June 14, 1885, Cigrand was only 19 years old school teacher who placed a small-sized flag on the dice which had 38 stars. He then urged the students to write essays on the flag of the USA and its importance according to National Flag Day website. He utilized this task to pay tribute to Congress’ acceptance of stars and stripes as the flag of the United States of America on June 14, 1777.

Cigrand struggled for many years to revive the old grandeur of the Untied States of America. Ultimately in 1916,
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed and declared June 14 as the Flag Day of the United States of America.

According to The National Flag Day website, the president’s proclamation of Flag Day was in fact the result of Cigrand’s efforts which he made in his life. In 1949, President Harry Truman passed an Act of Congress marking 14th June as the National Flag Day. But still the National Flag Day is not a federal holiday. There are certain formalities to celebrate National Flag Day. For instance, the Flag is hoisted from sunrise to sunset. The hoisting of the Flag is to be done ceremoniously and not in an informal way. The flag can be flown at night but with a shining light on it.
